Introduction:

Thank you for supporting me in growing together. I want to educate about something fundamental to our growth as individuals: the importance of new habits, new skills, and a new mindset.  Think about a time when you decided to change something significant. For some, it could be trying to learn a new language, adopting a healthier lifestyle, or pursuing a different career path.

The story below illustrates the journey of transformation. Sarah is a marketing executive in her late twenties, who always dreamt of becoming a graphic designer. She admired other designers' work, often thinking, "I wish I could create something like that." Yet, she never truly believed she could. One day, during a meeting, she overheard a colleague talking about taking an online course in graphic design. This sparked something in her, and she decided to make a change. She wanted a new habit and a new skill. So, she committed to spending just 30 minutes each day practicing graphic design.

It wasn’t easy; she struggled with the software and felt overwhelmed by the process. Sarah embraced the discomfort instead of avoiding it. Each night after work, she would sit down with her laptop, coffee in hand, and relentlessly practice.

 Creating New Habits:

The first key to Sarah’s transformation was establishing a new habit. According to recent research from the University of South Australia, new habits typically take around two months to engrain and can take up to almost a year for some individuals.

In Sarah’s case, she developed persistence and structure. She created a daily schedule, blocked out time for learning, and eliminated distractions.  Every small step she took reinforced her commitment. With the habitual practice, she slowly became familiar with design principles and software. Small and achievable consistent actions can lead to great changes.

 Acquiring New Skills:

As weeks turned into months, Sarah's confidence grew. With every completed tutorial, she acquired new skills— from creating logos to designing web pages. She took her learning to the next level and joined online communities of designers and received feedback and ideas, which pushed her boundaries even further.  It's important to highlight that acquiring new skills often requires stepping outside your comfort zone. She didn’t stop practicing on her own. She engaged with others, which provided her with skills and a new network.

What skills have you thought about acquiring? Perhaps coding, painting, or public speaking? The options are limitless, and the choice is yours.

 Cultivating a New Mindset:

Now, let’s talk about the third component in Sarah’s journey: cultivating a new mindset. For Sarah, this was perhaps the most challenging aspect. Initially, she faced self-doubt and the fear of failure. However, she gradually transformed her mindset from a fixed to a growth.  A growth mindset is the belief that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work— intelligence and talent are just the starting points. It’s about embracing challenges, persisting through obstacles, and learning from failures.  As Sarah began to internalize this mindset, she started to view every mistake as an opportunity for learning rather than a setback.

 Conclusion:

In conclusion, Sarah’s journey teaches us three vital lessons about personal growth:

 1. Creating New Habits: Commitment to small, daily actions can lead to significant transformation over time.

 2. Acquiring New Skills: Step outside your comfort zone, engage with others and embrace the learning process.

 3. Cultivating a New Mindset: Develop a growth mindset that helps you embrace challenges and learn from failures.

So, as you go about your day, think about what new habits you can adopt, what skills you can develop, and what mindset shifts you might need. Remember that the power to change your life is within you.

Turn your dreams into reality.
